The challenge
Fingrid, Finland’s national transmission system operator, needed to modernise how it maintained its Extra High Voltage (EHV) assets. Traditional inspection methods relied on physical fieldwork and scheduled outages, which introduced inefficiencies, safety risks, and limited visibility into asset condition. With rising demands for reliability, sustainability, and data accuracy, Fingrid sought a smarter way to manage its grid assets.

The solution
Fingrid partnered with eSmart Systems to be more strategic with initiatives focusing on conditional analysis of its 400 kV transmission network. The project introduced advanced aerial data capture combined with Grid Vision® software, allowing for AI-powered virtual inspections of towers and powerlines.
Captured imagery was processed in Grid Vision®, enabling maintenance providers to assess tower condition remotely and more comprehensively, on a single platform. The result was a dramatic reduction in the need for field visits and outages, while providing a full digital overview of the grid’s condition. This approach supports proactive maintenance planning, improves decision-making, and enhances safety for field crews.
