The challenge
As the energy transition accelerates in the Netherlands, Stedin faces growing pressure on its grid due to increasing solar, EV, and electrification demands. Managing congestion and maintaining grid safety now require detailed asset insights and reliable data to run accurate network calculations, support investments, and avoid delays in customer connections.
Yet like many long-established DSOs, Stedin’s asset records were impacted by legacy systems, inconsistent data, and gaps in documentation, especially across its 22,000+ secondary substations. Without a central, validated view of the network, Stedin risked making critical decisions on outdated or incorrect data.

The solution
Stedin partnered with eSmart Systems to digitalize all of its secondary substations using Grid Vision. The initiative began with a pilot and quickly scaled into a three-year program that built an image-based digital inventory by capturing and structuring high-quality photos and asset data for each station. All data items were validated using AI models and subject matter experts before being updated in core systems.
This structured, image-based approach gave Stedin a reliable, visual source of truth for more than 10 million asset attributes. With substations documented in a consistent way, internal teams across planning, operations, and maintenance gained faster, easier access to accurate asset information. Reducing site visits and supporting smarter decisions across the grid.
