The challenge

Evergy, a vertically integrated utility serving 1.7 million customers across Kansas and Missouri, faced challenges in managing the condition and location data of their vast transmission network.

Previously, the utility relied on spreadsheets to track asset defects, often lacking detailed or accessible imagery and struggling with inaccurate GIS data. This made it difficult to plan capital improvements, prioritise work efficiently, and maintain situational awareness, all critical in a modern utility landscape demanding reliability, safety, and cost-efficiency.

We did not track components like insulators, just the structure. We had outdated GPS locations and no central imagery. It was hard to get a true picture of asset health.

The solution

Partnering with eSmart Systems, Evergy launched a program using Grid Vision® to conduct virtual inspections and build a high-quality digital inventory of every asset on their transmission system.

By using AI-powered analysis and drone imagery, Evergy updated its GIS data, linked over a million images to component-level assets, and created a centralized, searchable asset database. This transformation provided engineering, real estate, and operations teams with a complete, accurate picture of each structure’s condition and location, accessible directly from their desks.

Detailed component-level inventory and condition data

Centralized imagery and inspection records across departments

AI-driven defect identification to support risk-based capital planning

Improved safety by reducing unnecessary field visits

A future-ready grid for Evergy

The successful transmission programme was just the beginning. Evergy is now scaling its approach across other asset classes and building internal capabilities for long-term digital inspection.

Migrating all sensor and inspection types into a single analytics platform

Expanding Grid Vision® to the distribution network

Testing deep documentation of substations

Training internal teams to conduct virtual inspections at scale

Applying risk-based analysis using enriched asset data to inform investment decisions
