The challenge
The island of Bonaire is one of the fastest-growing in the Caribbean. Its utility, WEB Bonaire, was facing mounting pressure to modernize its operations due to double-digit growth in electricity demand and increasing infrastructure needs driven by population and tourism.
The utility lacked reliable asset data and GIS coverage, and many existing assets were aging or undocumented, making it difficult to assess true grid conditions. This data gap limited WEB’s ability to plan effectively, respond quickly, and manage growing load demands. Internally, operations remained largely reactive, with limited visibility into asset health and performance.
The solution
WEB partnered with eSmart Systems to implement Grid Vision, capturing over 70,000 assets across its entire infrastructure. In just five months, WEB transitioned from incomplete records and manual inspections to a fully digitized, image-based inventory.
This shift has enabled WEB to assess asset condition directly from the Grid Vision, reducing outages and improving operational continuity. Using the centralized data, WEB also identified recurring vulnerabilities across the grid and took preventive action before failures could occur.
Grid Vision is now embedded in WEB’s daily workflows, supporting predictive maintenance and allowing the utility to spot and resolve issues early, before they escalate into costly or service-disrupting problems.
