Transforming the grid with digital asset data

Electricity North West Ltd set out to improve how it collects and uses condition data for its high-voltage tower network, aiming to increase accuracy, speed up planning, and build a digital representation of assets across its power grid.

Traditionally, inspections were conducted by either foot patrols or by helicopter. Ground-level viewing angles and inconsistent lighting made it hard to assess asset condition with confidence. Helicopter surveys offered broader visibility, but increased disturbance to customers and landowners, and reviews remained manual and subjective. Ground-based inspectors manually reviewed tens of thousands of images per cycle, often leading to inconsistencies and errors.

Without consistent data, capital programs were difficult to prioritize. Projects frequently had to be revised when the condition found on site differed from survey results, leading to abortive costs. ENWL saw the opportunity to modernize inspections and enable more effective investment decisions.

Objective, risk-based data to improve capital planning

As part of this program, ENWL deployed drone inspections supported by automated flight paths and AI-driven image analysis of its HV infrastructure.

Through this automated process, ENWL significantly reduced field time, resulting in cost efficiencies and improved safety.

Using Grid Vision®, the virtual inspection identified hundreds of observations and defects, including corrosion, insulator damage, and underwater foundations.

Data that drives decisions

ENWL’s goal wasn’t just faster inspections. It was better data for better decisions.

All objective, risk-based condition data now feeds directly into ENWL’s asset health models, enhancing regulatory reporting, supporting long-term capital planning, and driving smarter grid investment strategies.

With consistent, high-quality insights, teams can reduce abortive jobs, target the right assets, and avoid wasted field effort. The structured dataset also enables trend analysis, allowing ENWL to track deterioration over time.

We’ve seen a big improvement in the accuracy and efficiency of our inspections. The repeatability and quality of the imagery has been really strong, and the fact we’ve had no landowner complaints is a huge benefit.

Looking ahead

With more than 3,500 towers inspected in under 5 months, ENWL can now plan future investment with confidence. Using the data captured as part of the survey, ENWL is now looking to extract additional value, including generating clearance diagrams and improving pre-job planning. These repeatable insights also lay the foundation for broader applications, from the wood pole network to future beyond visual line of sight drone operations as regulations evolve.

ENWL is building a smarter, safer, and more scalable way to manage its grid, powered by digital asset data and aligned with its long-term asset management strategy.
