As part of its digitalization strategy, the company set out to capture and digitize all distribution assets to strengthen grid safety and support future growth.
Transforming asset management with AI-supported digitalization
eSmart Systems is partnering with Alliander to build a complete image-based digital inventory of approximately 60,000 substations and cable cabinets across the Netherlands. This digital inventory forms the foundation for improved asset management, regulatory compliance, and enhanced public safety under the Safe-to-Touch regulation.
Using eSmart Systems’ Grid Vision®, Alliander can analyze technical conditions, predict maintenance needs, and improve asset performance over time. The enhanced accuracy of asset data enables smarter capital planning, reduced carbon footprint, and stronger risk management.

The digitalization program has already demonstrated significant data quality improvements, with over 3.2 million data fields processed and verified. This enriched dataset helps Alliander optimize capital spending, lower environmental impact, and increase operational efficiency, ensuring safer and more sustainable energy distribution.

Safe-to-Touch compliance is an ongoing effort that requires continuous verification. Alliander plans to maintain data accuracy through regular audits, ongoing digital updates, and by outsourcing future data capture and verification activities to eSmart Systems.
